In the midst of the racial tension across the country, Georgetown University decided to own up to their part in slavery in America and begin a process of atonement.  Georgetown admitted that they had slaves and sold 272 of them in 1838, in order to get out of some debt.  They are now doing the research to find the descendants of those slaves and offer them the same consideration that they offer the Georgetown community, meaning that those who apply will receive an “extra look” when being considered.

“We must acknowledge that Georgetown participated in the institution of slavery. There were slaves here on the hilltop until emancipation in 1862,”said Georgetown President John Degioia.

There are no talks of money reparation or scholarships, but this is a step in the right direction.
