Legendary Qu!n’s debut EP, Est. 88’, is a breath of fresh air for hip hop amidst an era of brazy trap music, it’s sometime unidentifiable lyrics, and serious lack of original self-expression. Artist Qu!n, born and raised in Hartford CT was musically inclined from a young age and heavily influenced by family members in the business. After finishing college in New York City he worked on multiple mixtape projects with friends and in 2013 dove head-first into his solo career.
Est. 88’ brings a mix of classic hip-hop, eclectic R&B, and meaningful lyrics back to the forefront of hip-hop music. It gives listeners well shaped melodies, a polished sound and consistent delivery. Tracks like, Birds Chirpin’, Bordeaux and Morgan Freeman offer rich instrumental variety and help to shape Qu!n’s distinct sound. His message engages the listener with the thoughtful storytelling of following your dreams.
Qu!n’s newest single and video, Cruise Control, comes back with that original sound. The combination of strings and piano paired with the deep bass and drums makes for a sound reminiscent of 1920’s Hollywood glamour. That, offset with a soulful R&B twist, is refreshing to hear and a break from what is currently in rotation. The visuals help to play up the instrumental contrast as well. The video displays gritty images of graffiti concrete contrasted with the plush image of the classic LA landscape, oh, and the luxurious yellow Lamborghini.
With Qu!n’s creative strategy of originality and musical nodes to hip-hop’s past it will be interesting to see where his career takes him. Legendary may just end up being a fitting title after all. Qu!n’s newest project will be released later this year. To stay updated follow Qu!n and his music at legendaryquin.com.
