Ty Dolla $ Talks New EP, Upcoming Album, & Macklemore? W/ Joey Franchize & J Ricks

With his new EP Beach House out now, Ty Dolla $ign is ready to be Hip-Hop and R&B’s new sensation. Ty took the time to talk his upcoming album, and his thoughts on Kendrick Lamar and Macklemore at the GRAMMYs with Joey Franchize and J. Rick.

Ty Dolla $ign came out swinging with his debut EP Beach House, landing at the number two iTunes Hip-Hop sales and number nine overall in his first week.  He’s come a long way since his start in the mixtape scene, landing a spot within the ranks of Wiz Khalifa’s Taylor Gang and signing a deal with Atlantic Records.  “I’ve been doing this for a long time, but I think things fell in place right where they were supposed to,” he explained.  “We did two little moves back in 2009, from then until now, I’ve been working, molding myself, finding myself as a solo artist.  I found myself, now we’re out there.”

It’s clearly worked, because the rapper already has some smash records under his belt, and he’s prepping his debut album next, which will feature Kendrick Lamar on a song.  “I’ve got eight other songs that I’m holding for that project,” he said.  “It’s gonna be called Free TC, dedicated to my brother and every dude wrongfully accused and locked up in prison.  It’s a messed up situation, so I’m bringing light to that.  That’s gonna be out around July.”

The Taylor Gang’s new recruit is still working on more features for the full length, but there’s one artist he definitely has his eye on.  “I want to do a song with Jhene Aiko, I want to get her on my album,” he said.  “I actually want to get her on the song I’ve got with Kendrick.”

It should make sense as he’s collabing with the Compton rapper, but Ty does feel Kendrick Lamar was robbed when Macklemore and Ryan Lewis swept the hip-hop awards at the GRAMMYs this year.  “I think the only way for us to win is to dye our skin cells like Michael [Jackson],” he said laughing.  “It’s all good, [Kendrick] definitely deserved something.  He definitely had the best album, definitely was the best new artist.  But Macklemore, I’m not hating on him, it’s something different to the game.  I like his stuff too, I like his production on his songs, too.  But Kendrick still should have won.”
