Big Boi Talks Vicious Lies & Dangerous Rumors– And Outkast Reunions– With Jenny Boom Boom

Big Boi called in to Jenny Boom Boom and DJ Craig G, to talk all about his upcoming album Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors, his new song with Kelly Rowland, and the likelihood that he will record a new Outkast album with Andre 3000.

When Big Boi called in to Jenny Boom Boom’s show, he was on his way to his son’s football game.  The rapper is certainly busy, playing super-dad to his 11 year old, while also recording brand new music for his upcoming album, as well as a pair of songs with Kelly Rowland. The first song, “Mama Told Me,” may be tearing up the charts for the first time, but the song itself has stuck around for a while.  “I first recorded the song with this group, Little Dragon,” said Big Boi. “We did it a while back.” He decided to work with Kelly to re-record the song which has since become a hit.

Big Boi’s other new single, “She Said OK,” is pretty sexually explicit, and the rapper jokingly offered an explanation, saying “You know, me and Rick James have the same birthday. I like to keep it exciting.”

The former Outkast rapper will drop his new album by the end of the year, although he doesn’t have an exact date yet. “I’m tweaking the end of it. Some of the best songs came [about] at the end, I kinda stumbled on some new grooves, so I’m just taking my time so I can finish it up,” he said. “I’m putting sprinkles on the cake.”

The two songs released so far are very different, and Big Boi promises the rest of the album will be just as eclectic. “The album is electro-funk. No two songs sound alike.”  Big Boi tries to stay loose when it comes to developing an album, to stay as creative as possible with each musical output. “I just go with it, it’s like a scientist in the lab and you just do a lot of experiments,” he explained. “When it’s time to put it together, everything starts to cohesively mesh together.”

“Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors” is the name of Big Boi’s new album, which came from his grandmother. She wanted to write a book, and was very heavily involved in the streets, to the point where her story would possibly cause some trouble for her community. “If I write a book, I’m gonna have to tell it all. It might destroy some households,” he said, recalling what his grandmother told him. “She was cold blooded.”

The title also relates to the ongoing– and untrue– rumors that there’s any hostility between Big Boi and his former Outkast partner Andre 3000. “That plays in it too,” he said. “People don’t even know what they’re talking about. But they’re gonna learn.”

The new album will feature collabs with artists such as Kelly Rowland, T.I., Ludacris, A$AP Rocky, Kid Cudi and more.  The list includes several newcomers to the game, and Big Boi believes there is a lot of potential superstars in the next generation of artists.  “A$AP is definitely gonna do good… You gotta look out for Big K.R.I.T., too,” said Big Boi. “Big K.R.I.T. put out a couple of dope mixtapes… He’s a producer as well as an artist, and I got nothing but total respect for Big K.R.I.T.”

Another rising star who has some very clear connections to Big Boi is Future, with many suggesting Big Boi mentored the young artist.  Big Boi explains the rapper’s rise to fame was much more collaborative. “Future is actually part of the Dungeon Family. He was in a group called Da Connect, and they were the studs. It was like the young cats coming up under me and ‘dre and Goodie Mob and everybody at the Dungeon. He’s definitely Dungeon Family.”

Outkast’s future is still up in the air, although Big Boi says he’s ready anytime. “It’s really all on whenever ‘dre is ready to do it, we’ll do it.”  In the, Big Boi is focused on his solo project, despite Andre’s recent guest appearances after rumors he was done with music altogether. “That was a vicious lie and a dangerous rumor, to say he wasn’t doing music no more,” Big Boi teased. “You see what I’m saying.”
