This week on the Friday Nite Spotlite, G.Money da Prince and DJ Hawk sit down with New Haven’s own TJay 848.

TJay (848) (@TJay848)
Hip Hop artist TJay was born May 9, 1983 in the city of New Haven, CT, and is the founder and leading artist of the 848 movement.

At only 7 years old TJay decided that he wanted to be a rapper, after being influenced by earlier rap pioneers, and by age 9 he had his first official studio recorded demo tape. In 2003 his ambitious mindset prompted him to begin his “848” movement and now, with the highly anticipated mixtape, God’s Plan 2, he is set to take that movement nationwide.

The number “848” is a federal penal code used to describe a “Drug Kingpin.”  TJay’s interpretation of the number “848” is used to describe the lifestyle and “Sky’s the Limit” attitude of a drug kingpin but with a positive twist.

TJay’s rise to notoriety begin in the early 2000’s when he was released from a Connecticut State Correctional facility where he had spent 3 years due to a firearms and assault on a police officer conviction.  Through a mutual friend TJay teamed up with Harlem, NYC rapper BathGate and the two began “Blazing” the mixtape circuit with various song/freestyle placements on notable mixtape DJ CDs (DJ Clue, DJ S&S, DJ Kool Kid, DJ Envy, etc ). In 2004 – 06 TJay toured nationwide as hype man and was occasionally a special guest of SONY recording artist Ray Cash and was also featured in the video for Ray’s hit single “Bumpin My Music”, which featured hip hop legend Scar Face. TJay has also appeared along side Ray Cash
on a song on his DJ Drama assisted mixtape.  In 2007 TJay released his very own mixtape titled God’s Plan hosted by Cleveland OH’s radio/
mixtape DJ Joey Fingaz which featured Ray Cash, Yung Berg, and Lil’ Wayne and has since positioned himself with hip hop’s elite.

His new single, “Meet Me At The Bar”, featuring Bad Boy recording artist French Montana, has received radio spins in Connecticut, North Carolina, Miami FL, and Los Angeles.  TJay’s track “Where They At”, featuring UK rapper SqeekO (@Squeekstp), will be used as theme music for WBC IBF’s light heavyweight champion “Bad” Chad Dawson as he walks to the ring live on HBO, April 28, 2012 in Atlantic City, NJ for Dawson’s title fight rematch against Bernard Hopkins.  God’s Plan 2 will be released this spring exclusively through one of the web’s
leading sites for mixtape downloads.

TJay has performed countless times on many different stages. He’s recently opened a sold out show with rap industry veteran Jadakiss and co-headlined a sold out show with rap legend Snoop Dogg.  TJay is set to perform as the opening act on selected dates of Lil’ Kim’s 11 city “Return of the Queen” tour starting mid May, 2012.  He’s well respected and has even collaborated with peers like Red Cafe, Freeway, French
Montana, and Jae Millz.  He’s even had critically acclaimed producer Ervin Pope (The College Dropout) refer to his coming single “Shoot For The Stars” from God’s Plan 2 as a “Smash!”
